The U.S. Naval Observatory's Master Clock Facility in Washington will add a "leap second" Dec. 31, 2008 in coordination with the world's atomic clocks at 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This corresponds to 6:59:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, when the extra second will be inserted. This marks the 24th leap second to be added to UTC, a uniform time-scale kept by atomic clocks around the world, since 1972. The U.S. Naval Observatory is responsible for the precise determination and dissemination of time for the Department of Defense and maintains its master clock. For more information on the U.S. Naval Observatory's master clock, visit the Navy's Time Service Department website and the USNO Clock Vault webpage. So, what's a Leap Second and why is it important? For that, I refer you to Wikipedia rather than try to explain it myself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_secondI will say that Leap Seconds are accounted for in the processing of current Navy Combat Systems - that's why this story piqued my interest.

Very interesting Rick, learn something new everyday.
Love to join you for a BBC, thanks for the invite but don't think I'll be getting down to Guam anytime soon.

Well, I may wind up in Miami end of January for some training. If anyone is out that way, give me a shout, I'll bring the cigars!

Hmm..Miami... I've been thinking about bringing my 23-foot cuddy cabin down there and making a run for the Bahamas this summer. If you'll be in the Bahamas in July, maybe we can have a stogie

Dang, Bahamas would be nice! But, *SIGH*, this trip is a few days in Miami and back to Guam. Why Miami?? I haven't a clue. Last time it was in Norfolk. I'd prefer they do one of these on the WEST coast.
